Fire Land Band will play Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
It happened late one night on a dusty fire lane in the Pecan Grove at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Longtime friends and picking buddies, we finally found the right time and and the right sound, and Fire Lane was born. Jody Schmidt, a singer/songwriter from Bartlesville, Oklahoma stepped up into the beam of a street light and started belting out a good old classic Bluegrass song in the way only Jody can. Scott Schmidt, former Walnut Valley Festival Mandolin Champion and current Tulsa State Fair Mandolin Champion from Verdigris, Oklahoma added his legendary mandolin chop to the mix and we were off and running. Jim Vincent of Tulsa, Oklahoma, slid in with that lonesome fiddle, adding fills and flair and wowing us all. Cole Park of Bartlesville, Oklahoma was a flat-picking maniac on the guitar and made all the girls swoon with his honey-toned vocals. Audrey Schmidt of Verdigris, Oklahoma kept the beat with her old Kay and matched Jody note for note on the harmony parts. Through it all, Clay Cunningham, Former Tulsa State Fair Banjo Champion from Gore, Oklahoma, kept us rollin’ with that perfect tone. People stopped and stared as we played song after song, into the morning hours. Our fingers were numb and our voices raw, but we knew what we had found. Someone said, “Let’s take the show on the road, boys!” And that’s just what we’re gonna do. See you soon, down some old dusty fire lane.
